The project of the second electricity interconnector between Malta and Sicily, also known as IC2, has reached another important milestone. Over the past few days three tenders were published namely:

CT3031/2024 – Works – Tender for the supply and installation of a 132kV variable shunt reactor at Maghtab Terminal Station. e-PPS link

CT3032/2024 – Tender for the undertaking of owner’s engineer activities for the subsea interconnector cable link Malta – Italy. e-PPS link

ICM/TD 4/25- Tender for the Provision of Insurance Advisory Services to Interconnect Malta in relation to the Second Malta-Sicily Cable Interconnector and Utility-Scale Battery Energy Storage Facilities. e-PPS link

These tenders are part of a series of open procurement procedures issued by Interconnect Malta on behalf of the Ministry for Energy in relation to the IC2 project and follow the previous tenders that have been released for various components of the project. Specifically, these include tenders for the procurement and installation of the land cable in Malta and Italy, the manufacture and laying of the subsea portion, the 220kV shunt reactors and transformer in both Malta and Italy, the high-voltage switchgear, control, civil works and fire protection equipment in Italy, as well as the installation of walk-through culverts in Malta.

The first two tenders mark the sixth and seventh tenders issued in a sequence of open procurement procedures associated with the implementation phase of the IC2 project. The tenders are for the manufacture and installation, including civil works, of a 132kV variable shunt reactor at Maghtab, and for the provision of Owner’s Engineers’ services for the entirety of the IC2 project. Additionally, a separate service tender has been issued for advisory services related to the insurance of ICM projects, specifically IC2 and the Battery Energy Storage Systems.
