The IC2 project has entered a pivotal phase of implementation, with major technical milestones achieved this week at the Magħtab site marking significant progress toward strengthening Malta’s energy infrastructure.

Engineering teams, working in close coordination with EPC contractors, carried out successfully several complex operations, including the replacement of switchgear bushings, installation of new cable boxes, and extensive cable laying beneath the switchgear at basement level. Cable sealing ends were also installed, preparing the system for the next stage of integration.
Building on this progress, work is now advancing on the installation of the 132kV cable between the GIS and the transformer, accompanied by upgrades to GIS terminations in collaboration with Enemalta, Selt SpA, GE Vernova, and Demirer Kablo. These critical activities are laying the groundwork for the upcoming energisation phases.

“These milestones reflect the strong collaboration and technical expertise of all teams involved as we move closer to delivering a more resilient and efficient energy system,” said Ing. Ismail D’Amato, CEO of ICM.

The IC2 project represents a cornerstone of Malta’s long-term energy strategy, enhancing grid stability, boosting operational reliability, and supporting future capacity needs. With each successfully completed stage, the project is solidifying the foundation for a more secure and sustainable energy future.
